# What is Simple Moving Average (SMA)?

The average closing price over the last N sessions, such as 20 or 50.

A price above its SMA suggests an uptrend and below it a downtrend. The 20-day SMA tracks the short term and the 50-day the medium term; a 20-day crossing above the 50-day is a golden cross. Averages lag, so on NEPSE's thin, gappy trading they confirm a move more than they predict one.
