# How to buy shares in Nepal, step by step

Shares on the Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) are bought through a licensed broker's online Trade Management System (TMS) and held in your Demat account. You need three accounts first: a bank account, a Demat account and a trading account with a broker.

## 1. Open a Demat account and MeroShare

A Demat account holds your shares electronically. Open one with a depository participant (DP), usually your bank's capital company or a broker, and ask for MeroShare at the same time. You get a 16-digit BOID number.

## 2. Open a trading account with a broker

Choose a NEPSE broker and fill in its KYC form with your BOID and bank details. The broker sends you a TMS username and password. Each broker's TMS has its own address, usually tmsNN.nepsetms.com.np where NN is the broker number.

## 3. Put money in with your broker

Your buying limit in TMS depends on the money (collateral) you have loaded with the broker. Load it from your bank through ConnectIPS or the method your broker accepts.

## 4. Place a buy order in TMS

NEPSE trades Monday to Friday, with a pre-open session from 10:30 and regular trading from 11:00. Enter the symbol, the number of shares (kitta) and your price. An order at a price nobody is selling at waits until the day ends, then lapses.

## 5. Pay and receive the shares

Settlement is T+2: the shares reach your Demat account two trading days after the trade. Pay the broker the full amount before then if your collateral did not cover it. Then enter the purchase price in MeroShare (My Purchase Source) so your cost (WACC) is right when you sell.

## 6. Know what each trade costs

Each buy and sell pays broker commission by slab (at least Rs 10), a SEBON fee of 0.015% and a DP charge of Rs 25. A sale at a profit also pays capital gains tax: 3.75% for an individual who held over 365 days, 5% for 365 days or fewer.

To sell, place a sell order in TMS, then approve the transfer in MeroShare (My EDIS) so the shares can leave your Demat account.

Nothing here is investment advice. Prices can fall as well as rise.
