# How to open a Demat account in Nepal

A Demat account is where your shares live. You need one to apply for an IPO or to buy shares on NEPSE. It is opened with a depository participant (DP) licensed by CDSC, the central depository.

## 1. Pick a depository participant

Most banks' capital companies and many brokers are DPs. Opening with your own bank's capital company keeps the paperwork in one place; many also let you apply online.

## 2. Fill in the form

You need your citizenship certificate, a recent photo and your bank account details; some DPs ask for more. A minor's account is opened by a guardian with the minor's birth certificate.

## 3. Note your BOID

Once the account is open you receive a 16-digit BOID (beneficial owner ID). Brokers, IPO applications and the IPO result site all ask for it.

## 4. Get MeroShare

Ask the DP for MeroShare login details. MeroShare shows your holdings, takes IPO applications and approves transfers when you sell.

## 5. Get a CRN from your bank

To apply for IPOs from MeroShare, your bank must register your account for C-ASBA and give you a CRN (C-ASBA registration number).

## 6. Renew it every year

The Demat account and MeroShare each carry a yearly fee (reported in 2026 as Rs 100 and Rs 50). Unpaid accounts are frozen, which blocks transfers and IPO applications. You can renew inside MeroShare or at the DP.

Fees and documents differ between DPs; check with the one you choose.
